Commitment

The new year is here! Across America and the world, many diligently list out their New Year’s resolutions, and are eagerly anticipating self-improvement in the coming months. Most goals, however, take a while to fully realize, and too many lack the patience required to achieve their dreams. At this stage, the majority fall away, disappointing themselves and leaving their goals to collect dust or fade completely. However, such a fate can be avoided! Commitment is the key trait to ensuring success in one’s endeavors, and although multifaceted and occasionally restrictive, it will yield a harvest satisfactory to any New Year resolutions!

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, commitment can be defined as “a promise or firm decision to do something.” When one sets their mind on something, they do not dip from their resolve according to this description of commitment. This is important when dealing with long-term goals; the longer something takes to accomplish, the more some may want to abandon it, and holding tightly to a decision encourages steadfastness and the eventual fruition of a goal. Pursuing reasonable goals and setting rewards for each milestone enhances commitment, and reaching victory in these small steps boosts self-esteem, a crucial aspect of self-improvement!

Commitment has another definition; it is the “willingness to give…time and energy to a job, activity, or something you believe in”. Such a definition not only implies that one is willing to chase their goals, but also ready to pour patience and effort into attaining them. This portion of commitment is often the most difficult to execute, but as with any kind of cultivation, the efforts are often worthy of one’s time. (An important note on patience: maintaining a positive and peaceful heart and attitude is the best way to practice this discipline!)

At the end of the day, commitment generally lies at the heart of victory. It may take time to foster, but once this trait is sufficiently mastered, no resolution will be too daunting to accomplish. Happy New Year, and may you commit to awesomeness for the rest of 2025!
